China vows to adhere to Paris climate deal

World leaders pledged Thursday to keep up the fight against global warming and urged Donald Trump to be part of that effort, hours before the USA president was due to announce whether he would pull out of the Paris climate accord.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce his decision on whether to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord Thursday afternoon USA time (3 p.m. EDT; 1900 GMT).

The Paris Agreement, which was spearheaded by former President Barack Obama and signed by 195 countries in April 2016, aims to fight climate change by reducing carbon emissions and limiting global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius.

Mr Trump's refusal to commit to the Paris agreement caused frustration at a G7 meeting last week, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel describing the discussion as "difficult, not to say dissatisfying". Climate change does not respond to tough negotiations; it is not interested in bilateral deals.

It would not have been hard to organize experts in the Trump administration and GOP officials to argue that much in advance of a final decision by the president, but in typical Trump fashion, the president is ripping the Band-Aid off without much coordination inside or outside the White House.

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump denounced the accord, and called global warming a hoax aimed at weakening USA industry. To pull out of Paris but keep the United States involved in the broader UNFCCC process would take more than three years, but withdrawing from the entire framework would be easier-though the backlash for doing so could be even stronger.Global leaders began reacting to the reports of Trump's plans.

"Pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement would deeply damage our credibility on the worldwide stage and put us on a path toward very real and costly climate disruptions in New Mexico and around the world", Heinrich said.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang says fighting climate change is a "global consensus" and an "international responsibility". If the US does leave, he said, the Europe Union should seek ways to balance out the economic advantage that USA companies might have from the absence of climate regulations. The deal relies heavily on reductions in emissions by big polluter nations, and the United States is the world's second-biggest carbon dioxide emitter behind China.

Everyone cautioned that no decision was final until Trump announced it. Every nation signed on minus two: war-torn Syria and Nicaragua, which insists the deal isn't tough enough.

Typically, liberals say climate change is the most egregious and alarming cataclysm this world has ever come to know.

The party that ignores the reality of climate change has enabled the current administration with its contempt for expertise, its leadership of agencies by opponents of those agencies' missions, and its general disregard of reality. What they're trying to tell everybody is we're destroying the planet, folks, and they sadly convinced a whole bunch of young people it's actually in progress and happening.
