Scott Pelley out at 'CBS Evening News'

As cable news channels have drawn a growing audience in the last 10 years, broadcast anchors hold less sway but are still in enviable positions among TV journalists, and CBS was home to the revered Walter Cronkite for two decades.

Employees saw movers cleaning out Pelley's desk on Tuesday, but that was reportedly at the request of the veteran broadcaster himself, who is now on assignment in the Middle East for 60 Minutes.

"Scott's tenure as Anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News has been one of the finest chapters in the history of this storied broadcast", said Steve Capus, Executive Editor of CBS News and Executive Producer of the CBS Evening News.

Pelley has been anchoring the "CBS Evening News" since June 2011. He has been at CBS News for more than 30 years, joining the network in 1986 in the London bureau. CBS declined to comment Tuesday night. "So has his dedication to consequential reporting. He has the experience, the credibility and he is among the very best reporters ever to work at CBS News", Jeff Fager, who was then chairman of CBS News, said in a statement at the time.

But Pelley, 59, won't be standing on the unemployment line any time soon as the sources say he's been shifted over to 60 Minutes. In recent weeks, the ABC telecast has averaged the most viewers while the NBC broadcast has drawn the most 25-to-54 viewers. "I'm glad to accept this assignment with continuing gratitude". He joined CBS News in 1986. Once invisible, CBS is now competitive with ABC's "Good Morning America" and NBC's "Today" show - still third but gaining fast.

A source close to Pelley described him as "thrilled" to return to 60 Minutes full time, but "not happy about how it's been handled". We have this and more Scott Pelley news right here.

Pelley will continue to anchor the evening news for the near term.

Page Six reported back in December that Pelley was rumored to be on his way out.

Mason has been a top fill-in for Pelley on the program, and could wind up as Pelley's replacement, THR notes.

The newspaper's Page Six said his office was cleared out earlier in the day, while he was away on assignment.
