Trump meets Pope, calls it an 'honour'

Their meeting at the Vatican lasted 30 minutes.

No president has done what Donald Trump has done on his first foreign trip: traveling to the cradle of the three Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam- and then on to Rome, the seat of Catholicism.

When first lady Melania Trump finally moves into the White House this summer, she will become its first Roman Catholic resident in more than 50 years.

Climate change was on the schedule for Trump's visit to the Vatican.

The pope previously visited Israel in 2014, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Jewish state and the Holy See. Having famously described climate change as a "hoax", Trump may learn important lessons from the Pope's writings, which he promised to read. "I will say what I think, he will say what he thinks, but I never, ever, wanted to make a judgment without hearing the person".

The two men have had a rather rocky relationship.

Both Melania and Ivanka Trump were dressed in black with their heads partially covered, in keeping with a traditional Vatican protocol that is no longer expected to be rigourously observed.

Others made a decision to Photoshop the image after all. The two men were left alone with a translator to hold a private discussion before emerging again to exchange gifts and farewells.

"The pope is talking about climate change, he's handing [Trump] the encyclical".

While in the Belgian capital, Trump will attend his first summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Immediately after the meeting, the 80-year-old pope was due to give his usual midweek address to the faithful on St Peter's square while the Trump couple are given a private tour of the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.

"We can use peace", the president reportedly responded. The pope gave Trump a collection of books he wrote, as well as a medal crafted by an Italian artist featuring an olive branch symbolizing peace.

Melania, a Catholic, asked the Pope to bless her rosary beads.

He later flew to Brussels where he was to meet Belgium's king and prime minister on Wednesday evening before a day of meetings with European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders on Thursday.
