South Korea fires warning shots at North after 'drone' crosses border

South Korea's military fired warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly crossed the border past year. In its latest effort to develop its ballistic and nuclear weapons, North Korea fired a medium-range missile Sunday that appeared to be similar to one the country tested earlier this year, USA and South Korean officials said.

Tensions remain high on the Korean peninsula in the wake of Pyongyang's latest missile launch on Sunday.

"At the same time, we hope all parties can maintain restraint, not be influenced by every single incident, .persist in carrying out Security Council resolutions on North Korea and persevere with the resolution of the issue through peaceful means, dialogue and consultation".

Other sources said the meeting takes place on a quarterly basis, and state officials from "the center" travel to the provinces to deliver lectures on "trends" affecting North Korea's neighbors.

Local media said the object might have been a North Korean drone.

"The council is firmly united in rejecting the continuation of the launching of rockets by North Korea", said council president Ambassador Elbio Rosselli of Uruguay.

In 2014, soldiers exchanged machine gun and rifle fire after South Korean activists released anti-North Korean propaganda balloons across the Demilitarized Zone, but no casualties were reported.

"The [U.N.] Panel of Experts [on North Korea] have set out a range of specific measures which the United Kingdom would support, for instance: sanctioning key individuals, updating the record of sanctioned vessels, tightening restrictions on DPRK shipping services and clamping down further on financial transactions", he said. North Korea is threatening a sixth nuclear test. Despite this call, a new weekly ferry service between North Korea and Russian Federation began last week.

Brooks said, according to Yonhap News, a "very risky situation" is looming over the peninsula as North Korea carried out missile launches, claiming to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, who leads the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), made the comments a day after leader Kim Jong Un reportedly ordered mass production of a medium-range ballistic missile with the ability to reach U.S. bases.

It said South Korea was analyzing whether a North Korean military drone had crossed the border.

Despite sanctions and pressure, North Korea has repeatedly vowed to further develop its missile and nuclear weapons program, viewing it as a deterrent against what it claims is Washington's hostile policy against it.
