Bourdais undergoes surgery after Indy crash

Bourdais was resting at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and beginning the long recovery process from the horrendous crash in Saturday's qualifying run that left him with a fractured pelvis and broken right hip.

The owner of Dale Coyne Racing confirmed Sunday that Bourdais will miss the remainder of the season.

The former Toro Rosso driver was on course for a spot in Sunday's "Fast 9 Shootout" when he lost control of his auto at Turn Two on the third of his four lap qualifying run.

Two-time Indy 500 pole victor Ed Carpenter had the fastest vehicle in qualifying with a four-lap average of 230.468 miles per hour.

Quickly proving he cares about the new IndyCar community he is a part of, at least for one race, even Fernando Alonso was serious to ensure Bourdais' health was all that mattered.

"First off my thoughts are with Sebastien and Claire Bourdais in this unfortunate time", explained Davison to RACER. They were devastated, as you'd guess. The drivers closest to Bourdais were in the 230mph-range, with lap times of about 39 seconds. I got to know Sebastien a little better when I was living in St. Petersburg a couple of years ago, and we were teammates together at KV Racing in 2014 when I was a rookie.

"It was exciting, a little surprising", said Carpenter, who's trying to secure the top spot for the May 28 race. The crash occurred after Bourdais set the fastest laps of the day, reaching speeds in excess of 231 miles per hour and lapping the Brickyard in the 38-second range.

The phrase "no good deed goes unpunished" comes to mind here. "He was very good to me, very patient, and taught me the ropes".

Bourdais underwent successful surgery on his injuries and shared a photo on Monday evening that showed him standing up in hospital with the aid of crutches. We did it and tomorrow is the real thing, so let's see.

Bourdais won four straight Champ Car season titles from 2004-07 and raced in Formula One in 2008-09. Of course we have to assume it will be sometime before the driver can get back into his vehicle.

"Today was all about being in the fast nine".
