Trump says he was honored, inspired by papal meeting

The atmosphere at the beginning was formal and a bit stiff. There were smiles all around. After the media distorted what Trump said, the pope said if someone said he was only interested in building walls, that would not be Christian.

"It is my desire that you become an olive tree to construct peace", Francis said in Spanish.

President Donald Trump has bifurcated the country.

Trump's gifts included a collection of first editions by Martin Luther King and a bronze sculpture. "I think you will enjoy them". "A Christian would never say 'you will pay for that.' Never".

Trump and Gentiloni met a month ago, during the prime minister's state visit to Washington.

The meeting lasted 50 minutes.

AFP | US President Donald Trump told Pope Francis on Wednesday he was committing more than $300 million (270 million euros) to help prevent or tackle starvation in Yemen and several countries in Africa.

The leaders exchanged gifts.

"I'm gonna have to scare the pope because it's the only thing. they better hope that capitalism works, because it's the only thing we have right now". Trump, seeming subdued, said "it is a great honor". "We gotta get him to read it".

A Vatican statement highlighted "the joint commitment in favour of life, and freedom of worship and conscience".

A day after the deadly terrorist attack in Britain that has been claimed by Islamist group ISIS, bot leaders agreed that this goal should be achieved through political negotiations and inter-religious dialogue, with a particular focus on the Middle East and protecting the Christian communities there.

Francis and Trump have also responded differently to the refugee crisis. The thousands of pilgrims on hand forced Trump's motorcade to enter Vatican City from a side entrance rather than the grand entrance through St. Peter's Square.

Many of those pilgrims, though, had a more hard than normal time getting into the square.

Members of Trump's family also met the pontiff, leading to a lighthearted exchange between the first lady and the pope.

Accompanied by the archbishop up an elevator and down a frescoed hallway, the president passed more Swiss Guards in the Clementine Hall.

It was a subtle reminder that the two leaders had gotten off to a very rocky start over their different views on migration. And the pope just - can you imagine? Don't ask Pope Francis, because he's still waiting. He also said the thought a successful staging of the visit could provide Trump with a good news storyline to briefly overshadow the tumult back home over the firing of his Federal Bureau of Investigation director and the ongoing Russian Federation probe.

But, at least for Trump, their first face-to-face meeting was "fantastic" - though it appeared to begin a little uncomfortably, as Twitter has pointed out.

Meanwhile, the first lady went to the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu children's hospital - right next door to the Pontifical North American College, which is where US seminarians in Rome live. President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, wore a similar outfit with a larger veil.

The pope promised to seek common ground with Trump before the visit.

Trump arrived at the Vatican after stops in Saudi Arabia and Israel. One, echoing the US bishops, praised the Trump administration's decision to extend by six months the Temporary Protected Status program for Haitian citizens in the United States.

What is more, the newspaper said, "the budget also includes financing for the construction of the wall along the border with Mexico".

It's unclear if Trump tried to scare Francis during their meeting Wednesday, but the Holy See described the talk as "cordial".

The two men's often opposite worldviews collided head-on early previous year, when Francis was sharply critical of Trump's campaign pledge to build an impenetrable wall on the Mexican border and his declaration that the United States should turn away Muslim immigrants and refugees. The pope said previous year a man who thinks about building walls and not bridges is "not Christian".

They disagree openly on such weighty issues as immigration, climate change and economic policy.

"She personally wrote a letter to the Pope asking to go". I like the pope.
