Trump Russia inquiry: Lawyer 'chosen' by president

President Donald Trump has enlisted his longtime attorney Marc Kasowitz in a still-forming outside legal team that will represent him in the investigation into Russian interference in the USA election. Kasowitz represented Trump a year ago and demanded retractions and corrections when the New York Times accused Trump of sexual assault.

Kasowitz, who has known Trump for decades, has represented Trump in numerous cases, including on his divorce records, real estate transactions and allegations of fraud at Trump University.

The source said Kasowitz is expected to bring other lawyers on to work as a team to protect Trump.

At the time, Kasowitz and David Friedman, the firm's bankruptcy head, had been advising Trump on his Atlantic City casinos. Wearing one hat, Kasowitz is defending Trump from allegations of collusion with the Russian government; wearing another, he's defending Sberbank-which is majority owned by the Russian government-against allegations related tocorporate raiding.

Trump's decision to hire outside counsel comes as the investigation into his associates' ties to Russian Federation ramps up with the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI director.

Which outside lawyers will represent Trump...

But the possibility of Lewandowski coming into the White House signals that the administration is getting serious about its defense.

A potential complication for Kasowitz is that former senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Trump's leading candidate to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is now a senior counsel at his firm.

Kasowitz and a representative for his firm did not return requests for comment.

Another reason the hire is of interest might be because Kasowitz's name is on the law firm that employs former Sen. He's also one of Trump's top picks to replace James Comey, the man who was leading the investigation into Russian meddling in the election.

Even as Trump travels overseas this week, the Russian probe has continued to make headlines.

Olson, a former US solicitor general, rose to prominence in 2000 when he argued the Supreme Court election case that delivered electoral victory to George W. Bush.

But more controversy has engulfed Trump since he fired FBI Director James Comey two weeks ago amid that agency's investigation into possible collusion between his presidential campaign and Russian Federation.
