Trump administration hollows out EPA science integrity board

Trump administration hollows out EPA science integrity board

The latest signal of this movement is the dismissal of at least five members of a major scientific review board, rumored to be replaced with industry representatives.

Board members are limited to two three-year terms, where experts are typically reappointed for the second term, but the EPA made a decision to cut their tenures short to one term on this occasion. An EPA spokesman told CNN there are a total of 18 positions on this particular advisory board, and nine of those scientists were not renewed following the end of their three-year term. The Board of Scientific Counselors, whose members were dismissed over the weekend, evaluates the rigors of the research conducted at the EPA.

A spokesperson for Pruitt said, "The administrator believes we should have people on this board who understand the impact of regulations on the regulated community".

Freire said there was no specific plan to seek out more industry appointees for the Board of Scientific Counselors.

EPA spokesman JP Freire said the agency will consider new nominees, including those who may now work for chemical and fossil fuel companies. "While I have recused myself from making decisions on specific cases, it is my duty and privilege as the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to actively engage in rulemaking".

"I do not think I am speculating when I say that this is a political move", she said. "Instead, they should participate in the same open competitive process as the rest of the applicant pool".

J.P. Freire, a spokesman for the agency, said the Trump administration is now looking for nominees who better match the goals of the president.

Freire added, "We're making a clean break with the last administration's approach".

Pruitt "will most likely be replacing them with members who come from industry", said John J.

Greenwire reported as many as 12 BOSC members were not given a second three-year term, according to Greenwire, which claimed these advisers were "fired".

Sen. James Inhofe (R., Okla.), who questions the link between human activity and climate change and has several former aides now working for Pruitt, said in an interview earlier this year that under the new administration, "They're going to have to start dealing with science and not rigged science" at EPA.

Many in the scientific community have expressed fears that the move is illustrative of a broader effort to make the agency friendlier to industry at the expense of objective science.

The counselors are typically top academic experts in their fields tasked with helping ensure the agency's scientists follow best practices. At a February House hearing, he said the Science Advisory Board members are "rubber stamps who approve all the EPA's regulation".

"These reforms will strengthen the public's trust of the science the EPA uses to support its regulations", Science, Space and Technology Committee Chair Texas Rep. Lamar Smith said on the House floor March regarding the bill.
