Phoenix serial killing suspect arrested in deaths of 7

A 23-year-old man suspected of killing eight people over seven months in a string of serial shootings in Phoenix in 2016 is already behind bars on a murder charge for another slaying the year before, the city's police chief said on Monday.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams says the arrest brings closure to the mostly Hispanic community.

The suspect then went on a killing spree from March of a year ago through July, police said.

Tips from the public led to Saucedo being linked to last year's killings, Williams said.

Police are hunting for a serial killer terrorizing the Phoenix area.

Police previously said at least seven people were killed and two others wounded over a four-month period past year.

In the end, nine people were killed in 12 separate shootings.

Police said most of the shootings happened in the low-income neighborhood of Maryvale as the victims walked down streets or stood in their yards.

Saucedo, who has been in custody since April, pleaded not guilty to that charge.

Police have not offered a motive in the street killings.

Saucedo, the 23-year-old man identified by Williams Monday as the suspect in the shootings, was arrested in April for one of the summer 2015 shootings, the killing of Raul Romero.

He faces 26 felony counts of homicide, aggravated assault and drive-by-shooting related to 12 attacks, which took place between August 2015 and July 2016. According to the complaint in the Romero case, Salcedo said he did not commit that crime. "But my son is not coming back", Castro said.

Smith was seven months pregnant with the couple's child when Verdugo-Sanchez was fatally shot in front of a home.

She said she had grown frustrated about being kept in the dark about the investigation. "The fact of them finding somebody, at least it was some type of news", she said.

Jesse Olivas, 22, was shot dead on the street on January 1, 2016.

Stefanie Ellis, 33, her 12-year-old daughter, Maleah, and a friend, Angela Linner, 31, were killed outside their home on June 12, 2016.

In the most deadly single attack, two women and a 12-year-old girl were shot to death in front of a home before dawn on June 12, 2016, police said.

Pastrana said she spearheaded a neighborhood effort to encourage residents to talk to police.
