May Day Protests: More Than 40 Arrests Made In Nationwide Marches

Meanwhile in Portland, "numerous people have been arrested" in a May Day rally and march turned riot because of anarchists, police said. Police told people to leave the area, and at least three people were arrested.

Durand will lead a march of about 10,000 people in Washington for immigrants' rights.

Large events and actions are scheduled to take place throughout the region, including in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. Objects struck nine officers and nine people were arrested, according to Olympia Police Chief Ronnie Roberts.

"It is sad to see that now being an immigrant is equivalent to nearly being a criminal", said Mary Quezada, a 58-year-old North Carolina woman who joined those marching on Washington.

Her message to Trump: "Stop bullying immigrants".

Presidents of both parties dating back to Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s have designated May 1 as Loyalty Day, though previous presidents have tended to stick to lofty statements on the ideals that bind Americans together.

The "Rise Up" movement is the second major nationwide immigrant strike since Mr. Trump's inauguration. The day has become a rallying point for immigrants in the USA since demonstrations were held in 2006 against a proposed immigration enforcement bill.

Later that month, the administration deported 23-year-old Juan Manuel Montes, who was granted protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that was created under Barack Obama.

She says her mother has lived and worked in the US for about two decades.

Ms Doris Meissner, commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service in the Clinton administration, said: "The bottom line is that they have entirely changed the narrative around immigration". Dozens more were planned in smaller cities from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Erie, Pennsylvania.

Trump's efforts are opposed by many state and local leaders in heavily Democratic California, which in recent years has adopted immigrant-friendly policies such as issuing driver's licenses regardless of immigration. Pleasant, Zeferina, a member of the Committee for Labor Solidarity & Worker Power with the D.C. community group Many Languages One Voice, spoke to the intersection of immigrant and workers rights. And the platform of the Women's March in January was similarly broad, adding LGBTQIA, worker, and disability rights.

Los Angeles boasts a large Hispanic population and civil rights groups like the League of Latin American Citizens were out early this morning in a demonstration aimed at drawing attention to Trump's controversial immigration policies. If you can't take the day off, there are other ways to show your support, even if it's just by spreading the word to someone who might be able to go to one of the many protests or go on strike themselves. After speeches and chants, the two groups converged, moving from historically black and immigrant neighborhoods down 15th Street to the White House.

Several protesters, like 39-year-old Mario Quintero, admitted they were in the country illegally but said they wanted to contribute.

"I'm an undocumented imigrant, so I suffer in my own experience with my family", said Quintero at a Lansing, Michigan, rally. They're also in support of all the communities who have felt threatened or marginalized by the new administration - or, in other words, they're promoting an "inclusive society".

Hispanic grocery stores and restaurants throughout the Chicago area closed in solidarity with International Workers' Day, including all six locations of El Guero supermarket chain and the nine locations of Carnicerias Jimenez. "We are inspired by their pride in our country's principles, their devotion to our freedom, and their solemn pledge to protect and defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic".

Carrying the USA national flag, protesters march on May Day through downtown Los Angeles, California on May 1, 2017.

Other speakers included immigration lawyers.

Monday's "Day Without Immigrants" event in Stamford, Danbury, Bridgeport and New Haven was among similar demonstrations held across the country to mark May Day, a traditional day for workers' rights demonstrations.

May Day protests and rallies around the world and across the US are celebrating labor, calling for greater protections and benefits for workers and highlighting the contributions of immigrants.
