Italy gets Google to pay $335 million in back taxes

Italy gets Google to pay $335 million in back taxes

A Google spokesperson said: "In addition to the taxes already paid in Italy during those years, Google will pay another 306 million euros".

Google has been under investigation by Milan prosecutors for the tax years 2009-2013, one of several European probes looking into the tax practices of global companies.

The amount covers the period between 2002 and 2015 and refers to Google Italy and Google Ireland, Google and Italy's tax agency said.

The Italian Revenue Agency, which opened the investigation past year, said it would now seek to ensure that multinationals operating in Italy would pay taxes in accordance with revenues made inside the country. The payment is also "referenced to both Google Italy and Google Ireland units".

The company has defended the legality of channelling European earnings through its base in Ireland, which has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the European Union.

The sum, announced on Thursday, also closes other disputes dating between 2002 and 2015. "We remain committed to Italy and will continue to help grow the online ecosystem". As part of the deal, Google will agree to pay taxes on future income - largely related to advertising sales - generated in Italy, according to Italian tax authorities.

The US-based company has previously said it complied with tax rules in all the countries it operates in.

Local media reports say Amazon is next in the Italian tax agency's firing line.
