Trump to sign agriculture executive order on Tuesday

"I have faith that Governor Perdue will put the needs of farmers and ranchers first, and I know that rural America is thankful to have such a qualified agriculture secretary on their side".

The AVMA is pleased that a veterinarian, Secretary Sonny Perdue, DVM, was confirmed to the position of United States Secretary of Agriculture.

Senator Perdue said, "I rise tonight to speak briefly about our new Secretary of Agriculture, my first cousin, Sonny Perdue".

Isakson said in a speech on the Senate floor that Perdue's "experience and leadership in public service, business and agriculture will benefit our nation". Like Vilsack, Perdue was governor of a large diversified agricultural state who takes over USDA with very broad support.

He also visited Cuba, China and South America as part of several trade missions aimed at growing exports for Peach State farmers. "Governor Perdue's leadership is desperately needed by farmers, families and all Americans who rely on the USDA".

Democrats surely think so.

Regarding those contributions, Lee noted that farms and businesses directly involved in the production, distribution and processing of USA cotton employ more than 125,000 workers and produce direct business revenue of more than $21 billion.

Trump has also reached out to farmers on the issue of regulation, saying the government has too many rules that negatively affect farm country. Perdue was President Donald Trump's last Cabinet pick. Secretary Perdue will play a critical role working on issues important to the fresh fruit and vegetable industry including the 2018 Farm Bill debate, immigration reform, research, trade, and nutrition. Current farm policy expires next year, and lawmakers on the House and Senate agriculture committees will have to find a way to push it through Congress amid heightened partisan tensions and concerns over spending.

Mr. Perdue also will step into a growing trade dispute with Canada over US -produced milk used to make cheese, which some USA producers have argued is unfairly shut out of the Canadian market.

In a statement before the vote, Tiffany Finck-Haynes of the group Friends of the Earth said Perdue's "long-standing ties to major agribusiness and chemical companies" made him "out of touch with American values". Perdue will race into action, addressing USDA employees on Tuesday morning after a swearing-in ceremony and will join President Trump at an agricultural roundtable discussion at the White House in the afternoon. Robert Lighthizer, Trump's nominee for USA trade representative, and Alexander Acosta, nominated to head the Labor Department, still await confirmation, Market Watch reports.
