Prosecutors: Tad Cummins wanted to flee to Mexico with Elizabeth Thomas

The U.S. Attorney's Office charges Cummins began a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student, lied about it, stole his wife's vehicle, and took the girl to Siskyiou County in northern California.

"These allegations do not involve force, threats or coercion", Galloway said.

Cummins was arrested on a state warrant for aggravated kidnapping and he faces a federal charge of transporting a minor in interstate commerce with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

"What do you say in these circumstances?"

Elizabeth Thomas was at the center of an AMBER Alert for more than a month before she was rescued from a cabin in northern California last Thursday. Quinn said. "What were you thinking?"

He offered minimal responses as he was advised of his rights and the charges that could send him to prison for 10 years to life.

Danielle Thomas, Elizabeth's sister-in-law, told News 2 she spent time with the 15-year-old at an undisclosed location where Thomas is staying for evaluation.

The last few days have been emotional, Bozeman said, describing the time as a "roller coaster".

Commune residents weren't shy when it came to talking about their time with Cummins and Thomas. "She's just so happy to get food and coffee and showering". The alleged victim told authorities that Cummins "must have been consoling her" when the student who said she witnessed the kiss walked in on them, according to the complaint.

The man charged in the kidnapping of a Tennessee girl acknowledged in California federal court that he is the suspect and agreed to return to Tennessee to face charges there. "Of course we all have to make decisions every day, and I think he made the wrong decision when he chose to leave the state of Tennessee with a 15-year-old girl".

A former Tennessee teacher accused of kidnapping his teenage student wanted to flee to Mexico with the girl, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Cummins reportedly told deputies "I'm glad this is over", when he was taken into custody. Cummins, too, was gone, after borrowing his wife's Nissan Rogue and having recently filled prescriptions for erectile disfunction medicine and securing a $4,500 loan.

Thomas and Cummins were found in a small cabin in a very remote area of Cecilville, California, after Griffin Barry tipped off police.
