Sweet Drinks Linked to Dementia

Sweet Drinks Linked to Dementia

"When the researchers controlled for other risk factors, particularly cardiovascular risk factors, it explained most of the association between artificially sweetened beverage intake and the development of dementia". "It was somewhat surprising that diet soda consumption led to these outcomes", says Pase whose team is the first to find an association between diet soda and dementia. Its more “hypothesis-generating.”.

The team of researchers from Boston's University School of Medicine, said people who consume a can of artificially-sweetened soft drink a day were at three times the risk of suffering the most common form of stroke compared to non-drinkers. "NIH does not mention zero calorie sweeteners as a risk factor".

While the current findings suggest a link between regular intake of artificially sweetened drinks and stroke and dementia, the researchers stress their study is purely observational, so no conclusions can be drawn. Pase says the studies focused specifically on beverages because it would be hard to measure total sugar intake from all different food sources.

A total of 81 cases of dementia were identified over the 10 years of follow-up. Of those, 82 were ischemic.

In the decade, five percent developed dementia. Of those, 63 were diagnosed as Alzheimers disease.

"Our findings indicate an association between higher sugary beverage intake and brain atrophy, including lower brain volume and poorer memory. We also found that people drinking diet soda daily were nearly three times as likely to develop stroke and dementia".

The analysis adjusted for factors such as age, smoking status, diet quality, and education.

The findings of this study have appeared separately in the journals Alzheimer's & Dementia and the journal Stroke.

Gavin Partington, director-general of the British Soft Drinks Association, said the researchers had found no "cause and effect" or science-based evidence to support their theories.

But, Johnson said, there is a part of the issue that is “settled science.”.

Nutrition experts believe high levels of sugar contribute not just to rising levels of obesity, but also other health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, dental cavities and cancer.

Scientists have found a link between the frequent use of sugary drinks like sodas and fruit juices and cognitive decline.

There are some possible physiological mechanisms, though: For one, artificial sweeteners have been linked to glucose intolerance-the inability for cells to absorb blood sugar, allowing it to build up-which can pave the road to diabetes.

The data came from the Framingham Heart Study, a project of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Boston University.

Sen said the evidence isn't clear enough to make a firm statement when it comes to diet soda and dementia risk, though.

People might think that drinking diet soda is the healthier alternative to the more sugary options. "And don't switch to real soda". A 2014 study found that overweight adults who replace their sugar-sweetened beverages for diet drinks get to actually consume more calories than those who drink regular sugary beverages.

“Just because a beverage is advertised as being healthy because it doesnt have any sugar doesnt mean that it is healthy, ” Pase said.
