Microsoft will issue major Windows features twice a year

Following the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft has rolled out a number of new features to Insiders that will, in theory, become part of its Redstone 3 update, which is expected to roll out towards the end of the year. Maybe: It's possible the shorter time frame for working on each feature update means they will not be as dramatic/ambitious, i.e. not full of major updates, and therefore each update will become even more incremental compared to their predecessor. Combine the planning, preparation, and training into one cycle and you can easily see some cost savings because the focus will be on both Windows 10 and Office 365 feature updates instead of one at a time.

To do this Microsoft has just announced that it's committing to a predictable twice-per-year feature release schedule. From October 13, 2020, using Office 365 will require the use of either Office 365 ProPlus, or, for organizations that are using perpetual licenses, a version that's still in mainstream support. So, while Windows 10 Creators Update was arrived in March (it's version 1703), the next update will be Windows 10 Redstone 3 RTM (still has no definitive name) will be version 1709 of the operating system and it should arrive later in September. Microsoft also clarified that it will support and service each Windows 10 feature release for 18 months.

The company said the update also allows users to broadcast their gameplay on Windows 10 and Xbox One via a built-in broadcasting technology.

A developer has issued a patch that will enable users of Windows 7 and 8.1 to circumvent Microsoft's ban on machines with the most modern chipsets from receiving critical updates.

The company added that the update's new features include 3D, mixed reality, enhanced apps, improved security and 4K gaming.

Apparently, the rest of several Office 365 versions will continue to be updated as needed. The company not only promised two yearly updates for Windows 10, but also said that the same model would be followed for the Office 365 ProPlus programs. Now, after the latest announcement, we could look forward to bi-annual major updates for Windows 10 PCs around the world.
