Police fire Georgia officers recorded assaulting man

Days after two officers in suburban Atlanta were fired when videos surfaced showing them kicking and punching a motorist, authorities have reportedly dismissed almost 90 cases involving the pair.

(AP) - A Georgia police officer who was praised as courteous and professional previous year was sacked Thursday, less than 24 hours after authorities say he kicked a handcuffed man in the head.

Two Georgia police officers have been terminated after videos of a 21-year-old man being punched and kicked surfaced online.

It was Bongiovanni who pulled Hollins over in Lawrenceville, Ga., just outside of Atlanta.

The incident was captured on cellphone video by a witness sitting in traffic.

"The cellphone video is very disturbing and it speaks for itself", the Gwinnett County Police Department said of the first video.

Criminal investigations have been launched into the officers actions.

"When police officers betray the public's trust and confidence, justice demands that all those cases that depend on their credibility be dismissed without delay", said a statement from Szabo's office. He also wrote in his report that he could smell marijuana coming from the driver and that Hollins refused to cooperate.

Hollins left the Gwinnett County Jail Thursday with a bloodied face, telling local station WSB-TV, "All I can say is, I wish this had never happened to me". Bongiavonni was a 19 year veteran, becoming a Gwinnett County, Georgia police officer nearly two decades ago.

"I am nearly for a loss of words for what we had to go through today for the unwarranted actions of two of my officers", Ayers said. That officer, identified as Master Police Officer Robert McDonald, was terminated today, police said. There was no mention in the report of Bongiovanni hitting Hollins. Reports indicate that Demetrius Bryan Hollins was booked on charges including obstruction of a police officer, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, failure to signal, operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked registration, and several other traffic violations.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said Thursday that McDonald had been fired from his post, and a few hours later, said that Bongiovanni was also fired. Hollins was handcuffed and on his stomach when he was struck.

The department says an investigation into McDonald's actions was launched immediately, and he was sacked by midafternoon Thursday.

The policeman said he then had to deploy a Taser on the man then put him in handcuffs.

"You don't picture yourself seeing a police officer do that live and in person", said eyewitness Kenneth Dillard.

Hollins appears to have blood on his nose and lip in his booking photo.
