Ethiopia trash dump landslide kills 50

At least 46 people died and dozens more have been hurt in a giant landslide at Ethiopia's largest rubbish dump outside Addis Ababa, a tragedy squatters living there blamed on a biogas plant being built nearby.

At least 12 persons are still missing, and probably trapped under tons of waste at the Koshe waste dump. As many as 150 people were at the site.

Addis Ababa city spokeswoman Dagmawit Moges said most of the 46 dead were women and children, and more bodies were expected to be found in the coming hours.

The collapse at the Koshe Garbage Landfill on the outskirts of the capital buried makeshift homes and concrete building.

Koshe, whose name means "dirt" in local slang, was closed past year by city authorities who asked people to move to a new dump site outside Addis Ababa.

"My mother and three of my sisters were there when the landslide happened".

It plans to burn rubbish generated by the capital's estimated four million people and convert it into electricity. The resumption of rubbish being dumped here was the probable cause of the landslide, local resident Assefa Teklemahimanot told AP.

The mayor said people living near the dump will be resettled "in the long run".

Ethiopia has one of Africa's fastest-growing economies and is predicted by the World Bank to become a middle-income country by 2025. The landfill has been used for more than 50 years, with other, smaller landslides reported in recent years.
