Yahoo reveals hack of over 1 billion accounts in 2013

"We are notifying potentially affected users and have taken steps to secure their accounts, including requiring users to change their passwords".

In a statement released by the company, a spokesman for Yahoo said they were working with law enforcement officials to track the origin of the hack, but could not determine who was responsible.

The company has discovered a new breach dating back to August 2013, which exposed names, emails and hashed passwords for more than a billion users.

The California company said the data breach occurred in August 2013 and is different to the one disclosed in September that affected 500 million users.

That earlier breach, which Yahoo has attributed to a "state-sponsored actor", is "likely distinct" from the newly disclosed breach, according to the company.

Yahoo said that this was a separate incident from one previously reported in September.

In the mid-1990s, Yahoo was among the most popular destinations on the internet, helping many people navigate the emerging web. The data does not appear to include payment details or plaintext passwords, but it's still bad news for Yahoo account holders.

Troublingly, Yahoo's chief information security officer Bob Lord says that the company hasn't been able to determine how the data from the one billion accounts was stolen.

"Yahoo encourages users to review all of their online accounts for suspicious activity and to change their passwords and security questions and answers for any other accounts on which they use the same or similar information used for their Yahoo account", the company said. Additionally, Yahoo recommends using Yahoo Account Key, a simple authentication tool that eliminates the need to use a password on Yahoo altogether.
