Gore: US could switch to popular vote elections

Since Trump won the election with 306 electoral votes, at least 37 Republicans would need to change their minds in the next two weeks (36 more if it's true that one GOP elector has already agreed to change his vote) to stop Trump from becoming president.

Mr Trump swept to victory thanks to the centuries-old electoral college system, which distributes electoral votes around states and the candidate who wins in each state gets all of those votes.

Trump did make the list though, coming in with the third most-shared political tweet of the year, which was his message to his supporters after he was elected president by winning the most electoral votes.

The former firefighter, who says he was part of the response to the 9/11 attacks, says Trump "does not encourage civil discourse, but chooses to stoke fear and create outrage".

So, if the Electoral College does not represent the people, (the loser of the popular vote can win an election), does not represent the states (a candidate can win carrying only 11 states) and does not protect from the tyranny of the majority as the founders envisioned, what is its objective? If no candidate secures 270 votes, the House of Representatives selects the next president from the top three vote-getters in the electoral college.

"Mr. Trump urged violence against protesters at his rallies during the campaign", Suprun continues, as he lays out his case for Trump's demagoguery.

"We're first freeing the electors to be able to vote their conscience", Nemanich said about the aim of today's lawsuit. But what did the Democratic Party - more specifically President Obama - do instead? Meanwhile, support for amending the U.S. Constitution to do away with the Electoral College has dropped from 62 percent in 2012 to only 49 percent.

In 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election, then-senator-elect Clinton called for the abolition of the Electoral College, adding: "We are a very different country than we were 200 years ago".

Over the next two centuries, the United States grew to cherish democracy as an American ideal.

"A lot of them are telling me to vote for Hillary...a majority of them..."

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact would guarantee the presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

California's 55 electoral votes - 10 percent of the national total but not a determining factor on its own. Electors will vote to replace Sisneros when they convene December 19 in Austin and in state capitals across the country to vote for president.

No Elector has ever been prosecuted for failing to vote as pledged.

"We hope that once the first Republican peels away, once we have one who is fearless enough to stick to their morals, then we'll see a wave of support", he said.
