Dense fog in Delhi hits train services, flights

Local TV channels showed footage of chaos at the airport as passengers had a harrowing time due to delayed take-offs, while those scheduled to reach Delhi had similar experiences as flights could not land at the airport because of poor runway visibility.

It may be noted flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were disrupted with more than 200 flights being hit due to different reasons, including weather. "It subsequently improved to 800 metres at 11.30am and to 1,000 metres at 2.30pm", the official said.

On Friday, two flights were diverted, seven cancelled and almost 200 delayed as the worst phase of the dense fog was observed between 7 a.m. and 9.30 a.m., which is the rush hour at the airport.

The flight operations at IGI airport in Delhi has been severely affected.

"Forecast for next 24 hours is clear sky with fog at most places and dense fog at isolated places in the morning", the weather official said.

Road, rail and air traffic were affected at various places with flights cancelled and trains rescheduled.

Bhubaneswar New Delhi Rajdhani Express (22811) will leave at 21:00 hours instead of 11:40 am tomorrow.

The India Meteorological Department on Thursday said that India will witness "above normal" winter this year, but North India is likely to have less of cold wave spells this season. At around 8:30, the temperature was posted at 136 C and visibility below 50 metre.

Punjab's 553-km long global border was under the blanket of very thick fog with visibility reduced to zero, a Border Security Force (BSF) official said in Amritsar.
