Israel Targets Hezbollah, Syria Posts on Beirut-Damascus Highway

A report says Israeli military aircraft have fired four missiles against two targets inside Syria close to the highway connecting the Syrian capital, Damascus, to the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

The army did not disclose the precise target of the Israeli rocket fire, however the same area was previously hit by Israel. According to reports Wednesday morning, Israel requested Russia's approval before launching the strikes. Find us on Facebook too!

Meanwhile, the far-right extremist Avigdor Lieberman told members of his party that the Israeli army would respond to attacks from Syrian territory without coordination with Russian Federation or Syria.

They further reported that the strikes were carried out by Israeli Air Force planes operating in Lebanese air space.

The London-based Arabic news website, Rai al-Youm, meanwhile cited sources as saying that the first target was an arms depot belonging to the 38th Brigade of the Syrian army's 4th Division.

The Israeli military has not commented. It is nearly certain that the Russians knew in advance on Wednesday that Israel planned to operate in the area.

The Lebanese army said similar flights by eight other warplanes were conducted Tuesday, but added that it had no knowledge of an airstrike.

Prior to Netanyahu making his comments, the Israeli air force attacked a deserted United Nations base, which Israel claims was being used by Daesh in the occupied territory.

Israeli jets struck sites near the Syrian capital Damascus early Wednesday, local media reported.

Israel has largely remained unaffected by the Syrian civil war raging next door, suffering only sporadic incidents of spillover fire that have generally been dismissed as tactical errors by forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad.

Israel Military Intelligence Chief Aviv Kochavi is in Washington for consultations at the Pentagon, including with Joint Chiefs of Staff head Martin Dempsey.
