3 dead, at least 5 sickened after Thanksgiving dinner

Contra Costa Public Health is investigating the cause and do not believe there is any risk to the general public, however, no further statement was readily available.

Officials are still trying to determine what caused the illness, but they appear to have narrowed the source to a church-sponsored meal at the American Legion Hall in Antioch, California, an annual event that this year turned tragic. It could take more than a week before a cause is clearly identified.

It is unclear at this time if the meal is connected to the foodborne illness. 835 people attended on that day.

County officials didn't disclose which care facility the seventeen people are from, but they range from ages 13 to 70. We have not received any other reports from health care facilities related to this incident.

Golden Hills Community Church is a non-denominational congregation of more than 3,500 hosting multiple services spread over its two campuses located in Brentwood and Antioch.

"I spoke with them regarding the type of event they had and it does not need to be permitted by our environmental health".

Officials also said they have no reason to be concerned about the American Legion facility. "And if it wasn't from us, then we still want to help the people who hurt".

"If it were a food borne outbreak, we'd expect to see a lot more people getting sick", Balladares said. "If we have a family that all get sick from eating somewhere".

Confusing the investigation is the revelation that all eight victims live in the same assisted living facility. "None of us, and we all ate, brought plates of food home".

Officials are asking anyone else who attended the event and became ill with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea to come forward. "Just from our experience, it's usually something that is food borne", said Dr. Marilyn Underwood of Contra Costa County Health services, who is investigating.

San Francisco Bay Area health officials say the number of possible cases of food illness from a community Thanksgiving meal has increased to 16. Autopsies on the three people who died are happening Tuesday and their names may be released later Tuesday afternoon, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office. They have yet to figure out the origin of the illnesses.
