Pilots at Lufthansa announce further strikes this week

Lufthansa said in a statement that although 95 percent of its flights were still on schedule, 137 were canceled because of the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots' union's continued strike against long-haul flights.

The additional cancellations announced by the airline pushed the number of flights grounded since the walkout started to almost 2,800, with more than 350,000 passengers affected.

The strike by pilot union Cockpit affected European and global flights, with a total of 2,755 flights grounded and 350,000 passengers affected, according to Reuters.

In return, pilots would have to agree to a change to their pension scheme in which Lufthansa would only guarantee paid-in contributions.

On Sunday, an additional eight flights were canceled in Munich, including five intercontinental flights, and 27 in Frankfurt, of which 14 were long-haul.

"We have to talk", Bettina Volkens, Lufthansa's board member in charge of human resources, told Bild am Sonntag.

Cockpit is seeking retroactive raises of 3.66 percent a year going back 5½ years.

Lufthansa pilots are well paid by industry standards. Some short- and medium-haul flights would also be affected, it said. In all cases, passengers should check information about their flights at Lufthansa's website.

Strikes by the pilots cost Lufthansa 222 million euros ($235 million) in 2014, according to the IW Cologne Institute for Economic Research, while in 2015 walkouts by pilots and cabin crew cost the airline 231 million euros.

Travel search firm Kayak said nine percent fewer visitors to its site on Wednesday and Thursday had opted for a Lufthansa flight compared to the previous week.

Lufthansa once was recognized in the world as one of the most reliable airlines.

Since the walkout began on Wednesday more than 315,000 passengers have been affected.
