Obama: Despite campaign rhetoric, Trump will embrace North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

President Barack Obama, in his first comments on the November 8 election following the selection of Donald Trump as president, told those marching in protest and others upset over the nation's choice for president, said something he has been saying throughout his eight-year term. "There is no weakening of resolve", Obama said before departing on a three-nation trip that was supposed to be his grand valedictory tour.

President Obama said he told Trump that governing is different from campaigning and suggested he be careful with his changes.

Clinton's supporters say she faced a hard balancing act: She embraced Obama, hoping to avoid alienating his supporters, while simultaneously trying to acknowledge the persistent economic challenges and the uneven economic recovery.

The President said that there were many diplomatic, military and humanitarian levers of United States power that made America the indispensable nation in the world and that status would continue.

With his own legacy at stake in the election, Obama during the campaign called Trump temperamentally unfit and dangerously unqualified to be president. Obama said that Trump's lack of a solid policy foundation could make him open to change.

"It takes a while for people to reconcile themselves with that new reality, " Obama said of the choice of Bannon, a man celebrated by the white nationalist movement.

"And so we will try to share the lessons that we've learned over these last eight years with the incoming president, and my hope is he makes things better", he said, "and if he does, we'll all benefit from it".

Obama has also cautioned Trump against undoing of global decisions like the Iranian nuclear pact and the Paris climate change agreement, saying a great deal of effort has gone into signing these landmark agreements.

He said Democrats must broaden their focus beyond just swing states after an election that left the Senate and House in Republican hands, as well as most of the nation's governor's mansions.

Some White House staffers were surprised by the businessman's rudimentary grasp of White House operations but say they will work to get the new administration up to speed before January 20. "We have to compete everywhere".

Clinton kept a relatively light campaign schedule until the final weeks of her campaign, mostly attending smaller events in battleground states. Obama said the presidency often magnifies any personal weakness. One of the things you discover about being President is that there are all these rules and norms and laws, and you got to pay attention to them.

President Barack Obama has told reporters that President-elect Donald Trump will maintain the U.S.'s "core strategic relationships", including its partnership with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, despite Trump's remarks to the contrary.

"I think the Iranians have been violating this deal since before the ink was dry, and they're on a path to nuclear weapons", Bolton said at the time, contrary to available evidence, which Obama cited in his press conference on Monday, from Israeli intelligence officials (the Israeli government strongly opposed the deal, but its intelligence sources still say the Iranians haven't violated it).
