Obama set to veto 9/11 victims' bid to sue Saudis

Murphy and other resolution supporters were sharply critical of Saudi Arabia before the vote, citing the nation's human rights record, bombing of civilians in Yemen, failure to target the al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen and worldwide support for a conservative form of Islam. As the window closed the four Senators put together a resolution that sought to block the sale based on the provision of tanks.

President Obama is preparing to veto the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act, which will likely prompt an override vote.

Paul, Murphy and other opponents of the arms deal were sharply critical of the Riyadh government during debate before the vote, citing Yemen, the kingdom's human rights record and its worldwide support for a conservative form of Islam.

"It is outrageous that states have continued to supply the Saudi Arabia-led coalition with weapons, including guided and general objective aerial bombs and combat aircraft, despite stark evidence that those arms are being used to attack hospitals and other civilian objects and in other serious violations of worldwide humanitarian law,"Amnesty International's Philip Luther, said". That is a much higher number than I expected, and it does show that there is a significant bloc in the Senate that questions the wisdom of U.S. policy in Yemen and views the U.S. -Saudi relationship skeptically.

"The Senate, meanwhile, "will stay in session next week for a looming showdown" with President Obama over the same legislation", says The Hill. Some Senators who voted against the resolution took issue with the way it was structured while also criticizing the Saudi-coalition.

United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein last month called for an worldwide investigation of rights abuses and violence in Yemen.

In addition to human rights concerns, Paul and Murphy argued the sale might fuel an ongoing regional arms race. "I don't believe that Saudi Arabia is a ally that we can trust", he said.

The Senate will go first in voting on the veto message.

"The war inside Yemen has been a disaster for USA national security interests. If you want to lose Saudi Arabia as an ally, be careful what you wish for".

But while the resolution was stopped, the unprecedented public criticism of Saudi Arabia in congress continues to grow.

"The administration should rethink their planned veto of this bill but if they won't, they ought to move quickly so that Congress has the chance to vote to override - the sooner the better, " Schumer said.

The new law isn't an indictment of Saudi Arabia or any other country.

"Obama is showing he's on the side of the Saudis instead of the 9/11 families and the American people", said Sean Passananti, 47, who carried a photo of his father, who was killed at New York's World Trade Center.

Press TV: Do you see any time down the road in the future that the Saudis and the Americans in fact will be held to account for these arm sales going to a dictatorship? He noted that there are still "additional opportunities" available to block the US weapons sale to Saudi Arabia, and urged the president and Congress to act on these.

"The Saudis in many, many ways have been good allies of the United States over the years", McConnell said. Though it has the potential to actually slow the Saudi war effort and protect civilians inside Yemen, the bill has languished in committee since April.

In March 2015 a Saudi-led coalition of nine Arab countries began a military campaign against the Houthi armed group in Yemen.
