Jeremy Corbyn wants greater input from Labour members

Lord Parry Mitchell said Labour was a "lost cause" in a ferocious attack on the leader following Corbyn's triumphant victory in the leadership battle against Owen Smith.

He later told the Momentum event: "I want to see much greater democracy in the party and unleashing and unlocking of ideas and potential, and this event here is a very important event in itself and gives many people that opportunity to come together and have those debates".

Ms Davidson, who made a success of pitching her party at Scottish No voters in the Holyrood elections earlier this year overtaking Labour as the man opposition to the SNP, hopes to take further support from Labour.

Smith congratulated his rival "on being elected decisively as our leader".

However, former shadow health secretary Heidi Alexander, who quit in protest at Mr Corbyn's leadership, said centrists in the party would continue "fighting" to make it electable.

During the election campaign, he rejected his critics' accusation that Labour was incapable of winning a parliamentary majority under his leadership.

The party's rightwing now say they need to take stock, with some pushing to regain some control of the party machinery and boost groups promoting more centre-left policies.

Jeremy Corbyn could face difficulties forming his top team after proposals aimed at uniting the party were kicked into the long grass. But the 67-year-old socialist won 62 percent of votes from grass-roots members to remain leader in results announced Saturday. "The review of boundaries should not be an excuse for Conservatives or others to reduce the number of Labour MPs".

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, the former shadow foreign secretary said: "Jeremy Corbyn has rightly condemned abuse many times".

Atriumphant Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to reward Labour's mass membership with more power over the running of the party, after he inflicted a thumping defeat on leadership challenger Owen Smith.

Mr Umunna dismissed reports that he was being lined up to challenge Mr Corbyn before the next general election.

"I'm reaching out to all our MPs, having lots of discussions with them", said Mr Corbyn.

Leftwingers object to the new places for Scotland and Wales being appointed by the party's executives rather than rank and file members. He said to supporters, "This party is strong".

I'm glad we've finally got a proper socialist leader, willing to confront fascism wherever he sees it - Assad, Syria or Putin's Russian Federation.

"This is a huge political issue, it's the most significant economic issue facing Britain in my or your lifetime and I think at the very least parliament should be fully informed". These moves were seen by pro-Corbyn supporters as moves to try and restrict the MP from retaining his lead - however, if such moves were intended in such a way, they have fallen flat.

Labour's deputy leader said women wanting to access legal aid to help them divorce or separate from an abusive partner are being charged a "hidden health fee" of up to £125.
