Libya says attacks on 2 key oil terminals repelled

Libya has been in turmoil, with rival administrations and militias fighting for control of the oil-rich country since the 2011 revolt that ousted longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

On Thursday, the NOC announced an "immediate" resumption of oil exports from two of those ports.

Libya is resuming oil exports from some of its main ports which forces loyal to eastern commander Khalifa Haftar seized in recent days and has lifted related "force majeuere" contractual clauses, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) said on Thursday.

But it has struggled to impose its authority amid opposition from the rival internationally recognised parliament in the eastern city of Tobruk which has refused to give the GNA its vote of confidence.

The four oil terminals had been guarded by members of the Petrol Facilities Guard (PFG), allied with the GNA, but were quickly taken over by Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA).

The four ports lie in Libya's so-called oil crescent region.

A Haftar spokesman, Mohamad Ibset, said earlier that guards loyal to the GNA had attacked.

"We attacked Al-Sidra and Ras Lanuf, and Haftar's forces are trying to hit us with their warplanes", spokesman Ali al-Hassi told AFP.

The north African nation is highly dependent on hydrocarbon revenues and needs oil exports to resume to save its economy from collapse.

The latest developments are viewed by the public as an extremely positive who are mobilizing in support of the national army which has broken the stalemate around the resumption of oil exports which lasted for three years.

The NOC said a previously damaged oil storage tank in the neighbouring port of Es Sider had been set on fire, but firefighting teams were expected to control the blaze shortly.

Since the capture of the terminals, Sanalla has vowed to oil double production from Libya, which with an estimated 48 billion barrels holds Africa's largest oil reserves.

The GNA, created previous year as a UN-brokered power-sharing government, still needs a vote of confidence from the rival parliament based in the east.

Haftar's Libyan National Army and the pro-Haftar head of Libya's eastern parliament have pledged to keep the seized ports under NOC control.

The offensive in the oil region came as pro-GNA forces backed by U.S. air strikes pressed a months-long campaign to expel the last Islamic State group jihadists from the coastal city of Sirte, their former North African bastion.

"Our forces are using heavy artillery to target the positions where Daesh holdouts are cowering", they said.

They also said LNA fighters had seen Jathran on Sunday during the clashes, and said he had been injured in the shoulder.
